Network Fundamentals & Terminologies

What is a Computer Network?

A Computer Network is a group of communication devices / machines / IP addresses / hosts connected together to share information and resources.

Definition: Connecting multiple devices (computers) together to share information.

Key Terminologies

TermDefinition
NodeAny device connected to the network — a computer, a printer, etc.
NetworkA group of communication devices/machines/IP addresses/hosts
Computer NetworkGroup of computing devices connected to share information and resources
NIC (Network Interface Card)Circuit board used to connect computers to the network; usually Ethernet card
DataInformation being transmitted
CommunicationExchange of data between devices
ProtocolSet of rules governing data communication
BandwidthMaximum data transfer rate of a network connection
LatencyTime delay in data transmission
ThroughputActual rate of successful data transfer

Fundamental Characteristics of Data Communication Systems

The effectiveness of a data communications system depends on four fundamental characteristics:

CharacteristicDescription
DeliverySystem must deliver data to the correct destination and only to that destination
AccuracySystem must deliver data accurately; corrupted data is unusable
TimelinessSystem must deliver data in a timely manner; late delivery is useless for real-time applications
JitterVariation in packet arrival times; high jitter causes audio/video quality issues

Components of Data Communication

MESSAGE --> SENDER --> TRANSMISSION MEDIUM --> RECEIVER --> MESSAGE
                 ^ ^
              PROTOCOL PROTOCOL
ComponentRole
MessageInformation (data) being communicated
SenderDevice that sends the data message (computer, phone, camera)
ReceiverDevice that receives the message (computer, printer, TV)
Transmission MediumPhysical path through which data travels (cable, air)
ProtocolSet of rules that govern data communication

Data Representation

TypeExamples
TextCharacters, emails, documents
NumbersBinary, decimal, hex values
ImagesJPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP (pixels)
AudioMP3, WAV, AAC (sound waves)
VideoMP4, AVI (sequence of images)

Data Flow Directions

ModeDescriptionExample
SimplexOne direction onlyKeyboard to computer, TV broadcast
Half-DuplexBoth directions, not simultaneouslyWalkie-talkie, CB radio
Full-DuplexBoth directions simultaneouslyTelephone, video call, chat
